Easy Card Games to Play As A Family

Card games are portable, easy to store, and offer gameplay you can jump right into. A traditional deck of cards (four suits, from Ace to King) offers some easy games -- think Go Fish or War -- while toy and game innovators have introduced some specialty decks, many of which have become classics!

At Skillmatics our team of educators have designed some easy card games that will invite your child to learn a variety of skills, from new vocabulary to social-emotional skills like turn-taking - all while having fun!

Benefits of Playing Card Games as a Family

Family traditions like Game Night or bringing games on a camping trip support memory-making, bonding, and offer everyone a reason to get off of their screens! The practice of game-playing builds communication skills, and you probably remember from your own childhood: personalities really emerge when winning is at stake!

Ratty Ruckus

Like tic-tac-toe, players are taking turns to see who can create a line of matches first. In this case, the matches are mischievous rats - different personas on each card. Players will practice decision-making and process planning as they try to complete a row or column.

Easy Card Games for the Very Young

Language cards help little ones build vocabulary and we’ve put together a variety of sets for you. Build your collection and introduce some easy games with your flashcards, for example, “Bring Me” or “Color Match”. Both of these games engage little ones because they are using their whole bodies to participate.

Using any variety of flashcards (check out our Animals and their Babies – too cute!) place 10 of them face up on the other side of the room so that you and your child can both see them. Say “Will you please bring me the horse?” and wait for your child to get the card depicting the horse. Repeat until your child has brought you each of the cards.

Bring Me

Using any variety of flashcards (check out our Animals and their Babies – too cute!) place 10 of them face up on the other side of the room so that you and your child can both see them. Say “Will you please bring me the horse?” and wait for your child to get the card depicting the horse. Repeat until your child has brought you each of the cards.

Color Match

With the Letters, Numbers, Shapes & Colors flashcards, pull the cards for colors and lay them out. Review the colors with your child. Then – go on a scavenger hunt! Tell your child, “We’re looking for something blue.” Then search among your toy collection or from a box of crayons and place the blue item next to the blue flashcard. You can do this as a collaborative team.
